"Reel" allure abounds at Ute Trail River Ranch where anglers can fly fish right out
their door on nearly two miles of private water on the Tarryall River, which has some of the finest fly fishing
in the region. Hikers and trail runners can hit the trail just across the river and head up into the magnificent Lost
Creek Wilderness on the Ute Creek Trail. Birders will find a variety of birds to observe on the Ranch's 70 acres
who make this valley their home or migrate seasonally through the area.
No doubt, everyone can enjoy the leisurely
pace and quiet beauty found here. Remember what it is like to skip some rocks across the water? ~ Lose yourself in a good
book? ~ Take that much-deserved nap in the middle of the day? ~ Gaze at the star-filled night sky and catch
a falling star? ~ Ute Trail River Ranch is the ideal place where simply doing nothing is time well spent.
Enchanting mountain lodge decor and
warm comfort await guests behind each log cabin door. All cabins and guest suites have been restored to reflect a simpler time, yet with updated
conveniences. We do welcome
families and guests of all ages. However,
due to our altitude (9,000 feet above sea level), the natural rocky terrain and proximity to open water on the river, we are best suited to families with older children. Originally homesteaded by George & Margaret Ellen Wheeler in the early 1900s,
the Ranch has been owned by only 3 families throughout its history. Current owners Jim Fagerstrom & Debra Baxter
are celebrating their 17th year at the Ranch in 2010. From their start here in the 1920s, the Wheelers offered a fishing
and hunting retreat in this spectacular mountain valley. Originally, they provided lodging in wood-framed, canvas-roofed tents.
Eventually, they brought in permanent buildings in the form of abandoned log cabins from the town of Puma City (now known
as the town of Tarryall), 8 miles down the road that once housed miners seeking their fortunes in gold in the Tarryall Mountains
in the late 1800s. Today, these historic cabins with their hand hewn logs and antique furnishings invite you to experience
for yourself just what makes this area of Colorado so special.
